PARENT SUPPORT GROUP SERIES
Beginning Tuesday, October 2, 2002 6:30-8:30pm
P.S. Group
The Parent Support Group will address the needs
and issues affecting parents and relatives who are raising or interacting with
children with specific issues such as high risk behaviour, attention deficit
disorder or other issues such as anger, self esteem or relationships. This group
will be run on a monthly basis initially and increased to bi-weekly based on
need and community response.
The program will be based on Barbara Coloroso's books and video's 'KIDS ARE WORTH IT'. This program will run once a month on Wednesday from 6:30PM to 8:30PM.
The program's primary focus will be to use methods of discipline that preserve the dignity of both parent and child, as well as an introduction to alternative methods and therapies.
TLC Club
Initially begins October 2, 2002 8:30 - 10:30 then
every Monday evening (Time on Monday to be announced)
Sometimes the hardest thing to do is say no. This group will run on a weekly basis and will deal with parents of youth who are in trouble: addictions, law, drop outs, runaways, etc. The goal of this group will be the same as the P.S. Group but will add a dimension of networking that will teach caretakers to act assertively and will provide a strong support group of other parents. The network will also serve as a "safe haven" for kids who are unable to return home from time to time.
Tough love is a program for parents troubled by unacceptable "Behaviour". That doesn't limit the program to parents of Pre-Teens and teenagers, for many young people in their 20s and 30s who have failed to make the transition into adulthood and have much the same dependency on their parents as teenagers do.
Fundamental to tough love is the parent/community support group. The parent/community support group brings together the parents of these young people to help each other learn to look at their problems differently and gradually change their responses to their children's behaviour. The group also reaches out to the schools, legal system, and human service agencies and professionals to develop a common understanding of tough love purposes and strategies, to achieve a cooperative approach to this pressing social dilemma. It will also feature an introduction to alternative methods and therapies.
